Women’s Business Conference Enlightens and Empowers

Approximately 1,000 women (and a few brave men) from throughout much of Southern California—who already are or are interested in becoming small business owners — gathered at the 2012 Connecting Women to Power Business Conference held at California State University, Dominguez Hills on June 14.

The large crowd was treated

welcome speeches laced together by master of ceremonies and HOT 92.3 FM radio personality Josefa Salinas, who made a generous offer to help any woman in the audience to promote their business on air.

Among those that Salinas introduced was the husband-and-wife team of alumnus and chairman of the California State Board of Equalization (BOE) Legislative Committee Jerome E. Horton (Class of ’79, B.S., business administration) and chair of the planning committee and city clerk of Inglewood Yvonne Horton, whose offices co-sponsored the event with CSU Dominguez Hills. The couple entertained and encouraged women business owners to tap into the resources that were provided through the conference and services that the event partners provide to start or advance their business while complying with California law.

Alumna Carmelita Jeter Now an Olympic Athlete

California State University, Dominguez Hills alumna Carmelita Jeter (Class of ’06, B.A. physical education) is on her way to the London 2012 Olympic Games in August after winning the women’s 100 meter race—her specialty—in 10.92 on June 24 at the U.S. Olympic track and field trails held in Eugene, Ore.

The 32-year-old Gardena resident was a star athlete while at CSU Dominguez Hills. Before graduating she had earned six All-America titles and set a number of campus

sprinting records.

Jeter holds the title “fastest women in the world,” after posting a time of 10.64 seconds in the 100m at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix in 2009 (only the late Florence Griffith-Joyner has a better time). She is now a three-time U.S. Champion in the 100m with this recent win, having also won in 2011 and 2009. She is a three-time gold medalist in the World Championships, winning for the 100m in 2011, and the 4x100m in 2011 and 2007. In addition to a silver medal in the 200 meter (2011) and two bronzes in the 100 meter (2009 and 2007) at the World Championships, Jeter has garnered podium finishes in countless other events in the 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m relay events. In 2011 U.S.A Track and Field presented Jeter with the 2011 Jesse Owens Athlete of the Year Award.

Carmelita will have a chance to race in a second event at the 2012 London Olympic Games if she wins tonight’s semi-finals and Saturday’s final round 200-meter races.

Go Carmelita, go!
