News and Information for CSUDH Alumni and Friends

In Memoriam: Martín Chavez

Martín Chavez (B.S., ‘82) (M.P.A,’85)

California State University, Dominguez Hills alumnus Martín Donaciano Chavez was devoted to the university, continuing well beyond graduating with a B.S. in public administration in 1982 and a master’s in public administration in 1985. He died on Friday, Sept. 21, after suffering a stroke. He was 53.

Martín served on the Alumni Advisory Council for many years to the time of his death, and had served as president in 2006 when it was known as the Alumni Association. He was part of the leadership committee that organizes the College of Business Administration and Public Policy’s Dean’s Medallion Awards Luncheon, and was on the CBAPP Dean’s Advisory Board for many years. He also served on a number of community-based committees for university, including for the annual President’s Scholarship Reception fundraiser, and was a familiar face at nearly every campus celebration in recent years, from graduation, convocation, to the 50th anniversary events and the ribbon cutting for the library wing.

Deeply engaged in his home town of Compton and having worked at the Port of Los Angeles for decades, Martín helped develop strong connections in his communities, especially in the area of education. Through his work at the port he took an active role in the International Trade Education Program (ITEP) that provides local high school students with opportunities to learn about international trade. Previously he was the recruitment officer for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

Alumna Margaret Quiñones-Perez Advocates for Students

Margaret Quiñones-Perez attended college as a single mother in the 1980s to learn how to help her learning-disabled children reach their potential. However, she achieved much more. With the help of faculty and staff members, the California State University, Dominguez Hills alumna (Class of ‘84, B.A., mental health research methods) reached her own potential. A counselor for 25 years at El Camino College, and a 12-year board member and current president of the

Margaret Quiñones-Perez (B.A.,’84)

Santa Monica College Board of Trustees, she has made it her life’s work to see that students get educational opportunities.

“My biggest value is [students having access] to higher education,” said Quiñones-Perez, who is also a member of the executive board of El Camino College Federation of Teachers union, and was formerly the chair of the department of counseling services. “Everything is about access to higher education, especially for underrepresented students, which are the majority in California. But it’s for all kids.”

As a trustee advocate, Quiñones-Perez explained that she can affect changes that improve odds for student success rates in three key areas: policy, budget, and the hiring of the college president and superintendent. However, the Los Angeles native said she originally set out to be a parent advocate and never had aspirations for public office.

“I was a single mom trying to make sure I was going to survive with my children and I was a strong supporter of my upward mobility and education, and everybody else’s,” she recalled.

But 20 years ago, frustrated with how her two children were being “guided” in their special education classes, Quiñones-Perez was encouraged by her friend, then-Santa Monica Councilman Tony Vasquez, to run for the board if she didn’t like how things were going. Quiñones recalled replying, “What’s that?” She researched the function of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Trustees, ran and won. She served on her first elected position for eight years, including one year as president.

Alumni Attitude Study: Let Us Know What You Think

During the past year, the Office of Alumni Programs has begun a process to more effectively and efficiently deliver programming, services and communications to our growing number of alumni. Your opinions and concerns are an important part of this process.

Please help us better understand what you expect from your university and your alumni association by taking a few minutes to complete a survey to measure alumni attitudes and how they impact participation with the association and CSU Dominguez Hills. Your input is critical to helping meet your expectations. For your convenience, this study is conducted online only, and you will not receive any mail or phone calls related to this study.

This confidential survey will be sent to all CSU Dominguez Hills alumni with an e-mail address. If you believe that we do not have your current e-mail address, please update your profile. You should be receiving the survey in October. The results will be ready in mid-to-late January and will be shared with alumni at large, staff, administrators, and volunteers.

We value the input of all of our alumni and hope that you will participate in this endeavor with us.  Thank you for your support and participation.
