Sam Enriquez: Above the Fold at the Wall Street Journal

Just a month after his promotion to national news editor of the Wall Street Journal in 2008, Sam Enriquez found himself reaching back more than two decades to his courses in economics from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
That fall, Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., a global financial services firm and |

then the fourth-largest investment bank in the U.S., declared bankruptcy, ushering in a historic autumn of frozen credit markets and government bailouts as the national and global economy teetered on the brink of collapse. After years of reporting and editing general news, Enriquez said, with understatement, that what he learned in his macroeconomics classes would “prove immensely important” in helping him understand, interpret and help edit the daily onslaught of news that evolved into the biggest story of the decade.

Steven Moreau: The Road to a Career in Healthcare Leadership

A bit of sage advice went a long way for California State University, Dominguez Hills alumnus Steven Moreau (Class of ’80, M.S., clinical science: medical technology) when it came to navigating a career that has evolved from being a microbiologist in a clinical laboratory to the president and chief executive officer at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange.
It was something his late father would often tell him: |

“When you come to a fork in the road, take it. And it doesn’t matter which path you take because what you do is you make the most of whatever path you choose.”

Sonya Barber-Earley (M.A.’96) has been appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to the California Physician Assistant Board. Earley has been a certified insulin pump trainer and consultant at Animas Corporation since 2008 and a physician assistant and certified diabetes educator at the Southern California Kaiser Permanente Medical Group since 2007. She has also been an instructor of clinical medicine at the University of California Keck School of Medicine since 2004. Earley worked at the Los Angeles County and University of Southern California Medical Center as a pediatric physician assistant from 1996 to 2005 and a pediatric resident from 1994 to 1995.
Barbara Haney (M.S. ’89) was recognized by the Daily Breeze newspaper with its People of Distinction award in the Business/Innovation category for her 22 years of work at Social Vocational Services Inc., a statewide nonprofit serving persons with developmental disabilities in community settings. She currently is director of community development.
Frank Putz, (B.A. ’86, M.B.A. ’94) has been named vice president of education for the Institute for Supply Management Los Angeles (ISM-LA), a not-for-profit association of the purchasing and supply management profession. Putz is an instructor for the CSUDH Online Purchasing Certificate Program through the Extended Education Department.

In Memoriam

William C. Horst (B.A. ’00), born on May 2, 1937, in Butler, Okla., passed away on Jan. 27, 2013, in Harbor City, CA at the age of 75. Bill was the founder, with his late wife, Retha, of The Harbor Gateway Torrance Outreach, a food bank for low income families. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard and once had the privilege of playing the trombone for JFK. Bill worked for Dow Chemical for 35 years. After retirement, Bill volunteered with the L.A.P.D and earned a Master of Science in Gerontology.
