Teaching Responsibilities and Academic Freedom

(Supersedes PM 01-07)

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) in its major policy statements has recognized that membership in the academic profession carries with it special ethical responsibilities, such as providing guidance to professors in such matters as utterances as citizens, and in the exercise of their responsibilities to students and colleagues. Its policy statement on principles of academic freedom and tenure indicates that "Academic freedom and responsibility in teaching is fundamental for the protection of the rights of the teacher in teaching and the student to freedom in learning."

At California State University, Dominguez Hills, teaching style, content organization, and grading parameters shall remain the prerogative of each individual instructor, within the context of academic freedom. However, the faculty acknowledge that some departments may require standardized syllabi and outcomes for specialized content courses and multiple sections of certain courses in the curriculum.
