Reorganization of General Education Requirements for Areas A-F

1.0     Policy Purpose

1.1. Each GE area will be reorganized to align with the CSU General Education Breadth Requirements and Title V requirements.

2.0     Charge

2.1. That the new CSUDH General Education program areas will be as follows:

2.1.1. Area A Basic Skills: A1 Oral Communication, A2 Written Communication, and A3 Critical Reasoning;

2.1.2. Area B Scientific Inquiry and Quantitative Reasoning: B1 Physical Sciences, B2 Life Science, B3 Science Laboratory, B4 Quantitative Reasoning and Problem Solving, B5 Integrative Studies in the Natural Sciences (upper division);

2.1.3. Area C Arts and Humanities: C1 Arts, C2 Letters, and C3 Integrative Studies in Humanities (upper division);

2.1.4. Area D Social Sciences: D1 Perspectives on Individuals, Groups,and Society; D2 Global and Historical Perspectives; D3 Integrative Studies in Social Sciences (upper division);

2.1.5. Area E Lifelong Learning and Self-Development;

2.1.6. Area F Ethnic Studies (may be fulfilled by upper division);

2.1.7. All courses previously approved as GE will be automatically approved if moved to a new area;

2.1.8. All courses currently approved for the current area F1, will be moved to the new area C3;

2.1.9. All courses currently approved for the current area F2, will be moved to the new area B5;

2.1.10. All courses currently approved for the current area F3, will be moved to the new area D3;

2.1.11. Area F4 will be eliminated because it does not align the CSU General Education Breadth requirements and there are currently no courses in this category;

2.1.12. Area D will be reduced from 12 units to 9 units to meet EO1100-R. The CSUDH General Education program previously had 9 units because Area F3 met the upper division Social Sciences. Therefore, Area D will remain 9 units, 3 of which art to be fulfilled by upper division courses;

2.2 The enclosed GE Comparison Chart will provide further, and such details as needed.
