Double Counting Upper Division General Education Courses and Major/Minor Courses

I. Reference

  1. This policy outlines the practices and procedures for departments and academic programs in terms of the unit count for upper division General Education (GE) courses and major/ minor courses.
  2. The guidelines in this policy are designed to:
    1. Assist students to meet graduation requirements within the scope of their major/ minor and General Education courses.
    2. Assist in maintaining consistency when calculating units for major, minor, and General Education courses.
    3. Assist departments and programs to establish or redefine double-count courses in majors and minors.
  3. Double-count courses will be noted automatically in each major or minor. No action is required by the student.

II. Policy

  1. Major courses and campus-wide required courses that are approved for GE credit shall also fulfill (double-count for) the GE requirement (EO 1110-R section 2.2.6.1).
  2. A course may be double-counted to satisfy requirements in either the major and the upper division GE or the minor and the upper division GE.
  3. Courses may not be double-counted for both the major and the minor.
  4. A minimum of a C- or better is required in each CSU or transfer-course in written communication in the English language (A2), oral communication in the English language (A1), critical thinking (A3), and mathematics/quantitative reasoning (B4). (EO 1100-R section 2.2.2.a).
    • Departments set minimum grades for fulfillment of major/minor program requirements. Thus, a student who receives a D in a B4 course, for example, in a major that requires a minimum of a D for the program requirement would meet the program requirement through this course, but not the GE B4 requirement.
  5. Students who complete double-counted GE requirements under one academic plan shall be considered to have met those GE requirements if they change academic plans.
