Reorganization of General Education Requirements for Subject Areas 1-6

1.0 Policy Purpose

1.1. Update CSUDH’s General Education requirements and Subject Area titles to align with the
CSU General Education Breadth Requirements and Title V requirements as codified in EO
1100 (R).

2.0 Charge

2.1. That the G.E. requirements will be reduced from 49 units to 43 units by removing the 3 units that constituted the Area E Lifelong Learning Requirement and by reducing the required lower division units in Area C Arts & Humanities by 3 units.

2.2. That the new CSUDH General Education program areas and unit distribution will be as follows:

2.2.1. Subject Area 1 English Communication

2.2.1.1. 1A English Composition (3 units)

2.2.1.2. 1B Critical Thinking (3 units)

2.2.1.3. 1C Oral Communication (3 unit)

2.2.2. Subject Area 2 Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning (3 units)

2.2.3. Subject Area 3 Arts & Humanities

2.2.3.1. 3A Arts (3 units)

2.2.3.2. 3B Humanities (3 units)

2.2.3.3. 3UD Upper-Division Integrative Studies in the Arts/Humanities (3 units)

2.2.4. Subject Area 4 Social & Behavioral Sciences (Two different disciplines across 9 units)

2.2.4.1. 4A Perspectives on Individuals, Groups and Society (3 units)

2.2.4.2. 4B Global and Historical Perspectives (3 units)
