RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of CSUDH encourages faculty, staff, and administrators to support CSUDH students who may be experiencing disruption in their education because of the federal executive orders relating to documentation and residency status, disruption in program and other supports due to dismantling of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and other related federal actions, and be it further
RESOLVED That the Senate reiterate the importance for all CSUDH faculty to accommodate students, many of whom have had or are experiencing hardships that include, but are not limited to, stress, anxiety, depression, other mental health issues, unexpected disruptions in work schedules, financial difficulties, shifts in housing and study environments, and the change in residential locations due to deportation efforts, and be it further
RESOLVED: This stance of flexibility and understanding may look like (and is not limited to), allowing students who are experiencing or impacted by loss of residency or housing (by the students or their family members) in the U.S. being able to complete their coursework through alternative means, and be it further
RESOLVED: that similar empathetic responses be encouraged for various services on campus, including but not limited to student housing, and be it further
RESOLVED: That this resolution be forwarded to all CSUDH employees.
RATIONALE: CSUDH was founded and continues to be considered a pillar of its identity, as an instrument of social justice. It was literally as well as figuratively put in its place to serve underserved communities. As a practical matter, taking a stance for flexibility and understanding during this period of uncertainty and instability for students will allow CSUDH students to complete their programs in a timely manner. Faculty who have related concerns should work with their college deans or the Dean of Students to find out what administrative processes might be useful to help the affected students.
