Resolution on Reclassification of Courses for General Education

October 16, 2024

2nd Reading

Approved 33/Oppose 6/Abstain 3

RESOLVED: That, consistent with the unanimous recommendation of the CSUDH General Education Committee (GEC), the below proposed language be accepted as a revision of the existing Academic Affairs policy AA-20MM-LL, and be it further

RESOLVED: That these changes be effective and incorporated into the University catalog as soon as possible, and be it further

RESOLVED: That this resolution be forwarded to the Provost, the President, the faculty of CSUDH, and all Academic Affairs staff.

RATIONALE: The existing classification of General Education (GE) classes is out of compliance with recent Executive Order, EO-1100-MM (revised) which governs the General Education Curriculum at all 23 CSU Campuses. EO-1100-MM (revised) requires:

  • the reduction of the required credits for Area C: Arts and Humanities from 12 to 9

  •  the relabeling of Areas A, B, C, D, and F in accordable with the GE Area Crosswalk contained herein. All existing GE courses in Areas A, B, C, D, and F automatically carry over to the new area names without having to resubmit to GEC for approval.

  •  the elimination of Area E: Lifelong Learning and Self-Development

These changes will apply to all students entering the university starting in Fall 2025. Continuing students may follow the guidelines for electing Catalog Rights outlined in Title 5 Sec. 40401 Election of Regulations.
