He also publishes on the history of Anglophone ideas of China, the history of Sino-British and Sino-American relations, British imperialism across East and Southeast Asia, and the influence of western education models on modern China and beyond. He has previously held year-long research fellowships from the Freeman Foundation, the East-West Center, and the British Academy, and is an elected Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
