Hakeem CroomBFSA PresidentDirector, Male Success Alliance (MSA)Hakeem Jubal Croom is an Educator, Author, Black liberation speaker, Husband, and Father. Hakeem received his B.A in Economics from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia and his M.A. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Sacramento State in California. Hakeem currently serves as the Director of the Male Success Alliance at California State University, Dominguez Hills in Carson, California where his work focuses on eliminating access, opportunity, achievement, and equity gaps for Black and Brown Male students. Prior to California State University, Dominguez Hills, Hakeem served as a Program Coordinator & Student Academic Success Coordinator for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center at Sacramento State where his work focused on improving academic and social outcomes for African American/ Black Students. Hakeem has had an 11-year career as a Student Affairs Practitioner and has held roles in Diversity & Inclusion, Residence Life, First-Year Transition, and Student Activities at four Colleges and Universities respectively. Hakeem sees the world through a Social Justice, Critical Race, and Pan-Africanist lens; moreover, he uses these vantage points to connect the linkage of social constructs, and human behavior to systemic racial oppression targeted at people of African descent. Hakeem hails from Harlem, New York City and is the middle of five Children. Dr. Kitty FortnerBFSA Vice-PresidentCollege of Education Graduate Education Division - EDD Program DirectorDr. Kitty M. Fortner has been involved in K-12 education for over 20 years in public and public charter schools. She is involved with the CSUDH’s Women's Leadership Workshops – a series of workshops designed to amplify the voice of women and support their growth but personally and academically, CSUDH Women's Leadership Reading Group – a community within the CSUDH growing and learning through the reading of material designed to amplify women and their work in the academy; It Takes A Villages – a CSUDH community event discussing topics about anti-racism. Dr. Fortner is also the founder of CALL (Culturally Authentic Leadership for Liberation in Schools), a webinar series of conversations supporting anti-racist education in K-12 schools. Dr. Fortner is the director of CSUDH's newest Doctor of Education degree program in the College of Education. BFSA Hopes: My hope is that BFSA can again be a space that elevates and uplifts Black voice, Black lives, and Black bodies as a united nurturing community. | |
Myla EdmondBFSA SecretaryAssociate Vice President University Communications & MarketingMyla Edmond is an innovative collaborator with more than 15 years of higher education marketing and communications experience. She has a deep understanding of departmental interdependence having created and led marketing strategy for academic affairs, alumni relations, and international education. She builds teams of leaders and strategic partners by focusing on disruptive thinking, emotional intelligence, active inclusion, and comprehensive integration. Myla currently leads the communications and marketing strategy at California State University, Dominguez Hills. She resides in Southern California and loves traveling, reading fiction, and writing short stories, novels, and essays. Hope/Wish for BFSA: My wish is for BFSA to become more visible and increase its presence on campus. To support more and new Toros, the impact of BFSA must be better understood, so as an executive board, we will focus attention on highlighting the members of BFSA and how they’ve benefited from their membership. | |
Dr. Laurie InmanBFSA TreasurerCollege of Arts & Humanities, Director, Student Success CenterDr. Laurie Inman is the Director of the Student Success Center in the College of Arts and Humanities. She has been an educator for 35 years, spanning the K-16 arena, as a teacher, site/district level administrator and literacy consultant. Before joining CSUDH in 2017, she was the founding CEO/Principal of Apple Academy Charter Public Schools in South Los Angeles and also founded the The Center for Independent Charter Schools, a nonprofit designed to provide resources to leaders of color, including trauma responsive services. Dr. Inman earned her Ed.D in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Teacher Education in Multicultural Societies at USC. | |
Dr. Tiffany HerbertBFSA Co-Chair ScholarshipStudent Psychological ServicesDr. Tiffany Herbert, Ph.D. currently serves as the Interim Director of Student Psychological Services at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). Her journey at CSUDH began 17 years ago and her love for DH students has served as a passion for her campus outreach, leadership, and engagements. Dr. Herbert has served on numerous committees, is a member of BFSA, a lifelong member of ASI student body government, and has developed countless programs designed to increase mental health to ensure student success. She is most noted for her development of Sisters United Mentoring Program for Black female students and Sisters United: Lifting as We Climb Black women's empowerment conference. As a tenured faculty member, Dr. Herbert served as Interim Chair for the Africana Studies Department and directed a two-year grant funded through the California Mental Health Services Act to promote mental health and stigma reduction on campus. Dr. Herbert was recently appointed by the University President to serve on the Anti-Racism in the Academy Task Force, an effort to identify and deconstruct systemic anti-Black racism in the university. | |

With a deep-rooted connection to her alma mater, Harmony's journey has come full circle, and she now dedicates herself to creating opportunities for future generations. As the Scholarship Committee Co-Chair on the executive board, Harmony combines her personal understanding of CSUDH's values with her dedication to student success. By promoting awareness of scholarships and grants, she's helping current students thrive and achieve their academic goals. Harmony's impact extends beyond her role, as she also facilitates transformative programs like BOSS and UMOJA @ DH. Her commitment to holistic student development exemplifies her dedication to fostering an environment where everyone can excel. | |
Anthony OnwuegbuziaBFSA HistorianRecruitment Administrative Support Coordinator, Mervyn M. Dymally African American Political & Economic InstituteAnthony Onwuegbuzia has been part of the CSUDH community since his undergraduate and graduate days as a student. He currently serves on campus as the Administrative Support Coordinator for The Meryn Dymally African American Political and Economic Institute. In addition, he is a part-time instructor for the Africana Studies Department. As the acting Historian of the Black Faculty and Staff Association, his goal is to expand on the institutional memory of the association. Furthermore, he takes pride in documenting, archiving, and showcasing the wonderful achievements that the BSFA continues to attain. | |
Dr. Monique TurnerBFSA HistorianCo-Director, Positive Psychology Lab - Psychology Department, College of Natural & Behavioral ScienceDr. Monique Turner is a current Professor in Psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills and a Pre-Licensed Clinical Psychologist (Ph.D.). Monique has research experience in Neuropsychology, Ethnic Health Disparities, Educational Disparities, Equity, and Positive Psychology which reflects her passion. She is one of the Co-Directors in the CSUDH Positive Psychology Lab which focuses on nurturing student’s strengths and researching similar topics related to authenticity, courage, and positive affect. She is also the Executive Treasurer of Psychologists of Color, Inc.’s pre-licensed psychologists support group. Dr. Turner holds a position for CFA’s E-Board as the Co-Chair of Council of Racial and Social Justice and as the NTTF Representative for the Counseling Department. As a professor at CSUDH, Dr. Turner has committed to servicing to her students and her peers in her previous position of 3 years (2020- 2023) as a Non-Tenured Track Faculty Representative for the Academic Senate in equity and social justice. In addition to her stewardship at the university level, Dr. Turner is the former President of the Association of Black Psychologist San Diego Chapter of Student Circle, Founder of the non-profit organization, Holiness Outreach Ministry (Beenie's Circle of Unity), which is a learning resource platform for students, and provides educational opportunities to their families and other community members. |
