FAQ

BIT Team: Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect when I file a BIT alert?

Upon receipt of a BIT referral, the BIT Team will review the information provided and strategize the best way to follow up. Individuals who make a referral may be contacted by a representative of the BIT Team for more information or clarification. Depending on the circumstances, that individual may not receive specific information about how the BIT Team plans on responding to their referral.

Examples of responses may include the following:

  • The BIT Team may determine that there is no need for further action but will monitor the situation and concerns.
  • A BIT Team representative will circle back around to the referral source and provide suggestions and ways to respond to the concerning behavior.
  • A BIT Team representative may reach out to the individual of concern directly to provide support and resources.

If the situation requires immediate action, such as situations where the individual is an immediate threat of harming themself or others, the BIT Team may coordinate with the CSUDH Police Department to assist in the response.

Are referrals to the BIT Team confidential?

The BIT Team will take reasonable steps to maintain the privacy of those who make a referral, if requested. If the circumstances don’t allow privacy to be maintained, this will be discussed with the person making the referral. On occasion, the nature and context of the report may make it easy for the individual to speculate the reporting source.

How do I know if a concern is a BIT Team issue or should be handled by other campus resources?

You do not have to make that determination on your own. The BIT Team is a multidisciplinary team from members across campus. The most important step is that you report the concerning behavior. If another campus resource is more appropriate, the BIT Team will refer the individual and handle the transfer of information.

What number should I call after hours?

In on-campus emergency situations, call University Police at (310) 243-3333 or 911 from any university phone.
