Message from the Chair

Welcome!

We are pleased that you are interested in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Our Department is located in the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences (NBS) on the beautiful campus of California State University Dominguez Hills (home of the Dignity Health Sports Park, the Galaxy and Chivas USA MLS soccer teams).

We offer two bachelors of science degrees: one in Chemistry and one in Biochemistry. Our B.Sc. in Chemistry is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) which is reflected on the diplomas of our graduates. We also offer B.A. degrees in those disciplines.

We pride ourselves on our small classes, one-on-one professor/student interaction and most importantly, the research opportunities that we offer our students. Here you will have a chance to become involved in undergraduate research working on some radiation resistance cancer cells; exploring theoretical research projects in nanotechnology, random motion, Molecular Motors, and kinetics of chemical reactions; participating in the synthesis of redox complexes; investigating the properties of new and exciting relevant nano materials; developing analytical chemistry methods; isolating and characterizing natural products; exploring physical properties of cell membranes with molecular biology -- to mention just a few of our research projects. Many of our graduates go on to pursue PhD and MD programs at top graduate programs such as: Northwestern University, University of California San Diego, University of California Los Angeles, University of California Irvine, University of California Merced, Johns-Hopkins University, University of Wisconsin, The Ohio State University and New York University. Others are now in dental or pharmacy school and still others are working in industry and for the government.

We have a wide range of opportunities to offer our students and we have a sustained record of placing students in professional and graduate programs. If you are a motivated student with a dream, this is the place and we can help you make it happen. We hope to see you in the upcoming semester.
