Dr. Mutchler Research

Dr. Mutchler is currently the Principal Investigator on a NIH-NIMH R15 funded study to explore sexual health communication between young Black gay men and their close friends in Birmingham, AL and in Los Angeles, CA. The purpose of this study is to address health disparities in HIV infection rates among this population by examining how sexual health norms may be transmitted when young Black gay men talk about sexual health topics such as HIV, safer sex (condom use, PEP, PrEP, and HIV testing), relationships, and dating with their peers. Ultimately, Dr. Mutchler hopes the data collected will be used to develop and improve existing HIV prevention interventions for this important population.

Dr. Mutchler is Co-PI on another NIH funded study with Dr. Laura Bogart (PI) at Harvard University. A collaboration with AIDS Project Los Angeles and RAND, this study seeks to analyze the efficacy of a culturally tailored HIV treatment adherence intervention for Blacks living with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County. Dr. Mutchler and Dr. Bogart also seek to investigate how stigma within their social networks is related to HIV adherence behaviors and other outcomes such as HIV prevention and mental health in a related study (Mednet).
