Dr. Hygh is an assistant professor in the Communication Department at California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) in the advertising and public relations program. Prior to CSUDH he was a fulltime lecturer and the internship coordinator at California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB). He teaches public relations writing, crisis communication, and integrated communications management.
Academia is a second career for Dr. Hygh. Prior to the CSU system, he was the senior communications manager for the Black AIDS Institute, the only national HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on Black people. He spent 20 plus years as the chief communications officer for The United Methodist Church (UMC) in five different regional offices in the United States (Boston, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Sacramento, and Jackson, Mississippi), and the international mission agency when it was based in New York City.
During his undergraduate studies, Dr. Hygh had press/media internships with The White House (President William “Bill” Jefferson Clinton, 42nd President), U.S. House of Representatives (Rep. Max Sandlin, 1st Congressional District-Texas), and the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Hygh is a lifetime member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and active with the Zeta Tau Chapter in Pasadena, the Black Public Relations Society of Los Angeles (BPRSLA), the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), National Association of Black Journalists Los Angeles (NABJLA) chapter, and the Los Angeles Press Club. He is a member “White Suiter” of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, the non-profit entity that produces the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl each year as well as a 2008 graduate of Leadership Pasadena, and a 2009 graduate of Leadership Southern California. A lifelong United Methodist, he chairs the governance board (leadership team) of Hollywood UMC and attends the Harmony Toluca Lake campus and serves on their leadership team.
Dr. Hygh is a sought after public speaker who brings a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to each speaking engagement. He has keynoted and facilitated communications training across the country. Dr. Hygh describes himself as a “fun and adventure enthusiast” who is a foodie and loves to travel. He has traveled to six of the seven continents, 29 countries, and 47 of the 50 U.S. states.
