What is Universal Waste?
Universal Waste is a category of waste materials not designated as "hazardous waste” but containing materials that need to be prevented from free release into the environment. It is defined in 40 C.F.R. part 273, by the United States E.P.A.
When sites fail to comply with the Universal Waste rules, RCRA fines can be as high as $71,264 per day, per violation.
Universal Waste includes:
- Batteries
- Fluorescent Lamps
- Mercury-containing equipment
- Mercury-containing thermostats
- Pesticides

Universal Waste Drop-off/Pickup
- Facilities staff will remove defective/old/damage fluorescent lamps when replacing them with the new lamps, without you have having to create a new work order.
- Drop-off locations for Alkaline batteries:
- Visitor Information Center
- Welch Hall (WH) 2nd Floor
- La Court Hall (LCH), room E-303
- College of Education (COE), mailroom 1403
- Natural Sciences & Mathematics (NSM), room F-127
