Design and Concept
In designing a facility to address the health, wellness, and recreational needs of CSUDH students, this 4 story, 83,000 square foot center would house the following elements:
- Two basketball courts/volleyball courts and one multi-activity court for free play and competition
- A rock-climbing wall
- Cardio workout equipment, including treadmills, elliptical machines, stair climbing machines, and stationary bicycles
- A jogging track elevated above the courts on the bottom floor
- Free weights
- Dance studio rooms with mirrored walls to host yoga, cheer, aerobics, and dance practices for student club performers
- Gender-inclusive locker rooms and changing facilities, complete with showers
- Office spaces for the director, staff, and student interns
Integrated Centers and Services
The facility would also house:
- A satellite psychological services and mental health center
- A satellite Student Health Center with numerous medical specialties
- A healthy eating and nutritional counseling center, complete with a video-capable demonstration kitchen
- A stress reduction and relaxation room
Budget for the Project
When equipment, operational costs, and engineering systems are factored into the construction costs, the expected facility cost is $85 million.
Financing the Project
We are proposing a model of funding that includes various segments of the external and internal campus community. These include:
- One-time capital funding from the State of California for a down payment of $20,000,000
- Philanthropic contributions from various foundations
- A student referendum to support construction and operational costs
