He earned his bachelor's degree in Radiologic Sciences from Arizona State University, his master's degree from San Francisco State University where he researched in relationship of education and radiation safety practices, and his doctorate from the University of Georgia where his research focused on the use of computers and computer screen design in education.
After seven years of full-time clinical practice, Dr. Tilson became a full-time faculty member but continued to be involved clinically with a specialization is trauma Computed Tomography. In 1982, he became the inaugural faculty member and head of the Department of Radiologic Sciences at Armstrong State University in Savannah, GA where he was Professor of Radiologic Sciences and grew the unit into 5 accredited RIS programs and an online degree program. Dr. Tilson’s research centered around radiation safety issues, improving the quality of professional education, and the impact of computers on professional education.
In 2015, Dr. Tilson became the Dean of Faculty at the University of Phoenix. After 3 years as Dean, he returned to his first love and joined the faculty at California State University Dominguez Hills in 2018 to start the first master’s degree in Radiologic & Imaging Sciences in California.
He has been very active professionally over the years and has held positions in professional societies including Chair of the Board for the international Association of Educations in Radiologic and Imaging Sciences (AEIRS), editor of the journal Radiologic Sciences & Education, chair of two Editorial Review Boards and is a Fellow of the AEIRS. He has publishing over 50 journal articles, made over 75 professional presentations, and co-authored two books and one computer program.
