The Modern Languages Department is committed to the success of all students regardless of their background and aims to help every student reach the course and the program’s learning outcomes. The Department prides itself in aiding students develop their full potential, in helping them foster a sense of pride in their cultural and linguistic heritage, and in preparing them to use their skills in professional settings.
It is the intent of the Modern Languages Department that students from all backgrounds and perspectives be well served in each of its courses, that students’ learning needs be addressed both in and out of class, and that the diversity that students bring to this class be viewed as a resource and benefit to all.
The classroom is a space where all students should feel a sense of belonging and where students with a wide range of abilities, identities, and perspectives can succeed.
One of the main objectives of our department is to cultivate an environment of respect where the backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives of all members are valued. The study of language, culture, and literature oftentimes leads to the discussion of complex themes and questions around issues of identity, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality, among others, that may be difficult or even uncomfortable. The MLG department asks for your collaboration to achieve a learning atmosphere that is comfortable, positive, inclusive, respectful, and safe for everyone.

Be receptive to others’ points of view. These can help you grow and be more critical with your own perspectives and possible prejudices.
