Steps to Enroll

  1. Review the Prerequisite Verification Form FAQ for detailed instructions, as well as the Prerequisites section below.
  2. Download and complete the fillable Prerequisite Verification form PDF (see FAQ link above). The prerequisite form must clearly indicate that the applicant has 5 years of experience overseeing workplace safety in the applicable industry.
  3. Submit the completed form PDF to the  OSHA Dropbox. THE PREREQUISITE VERIFICATION FORM MUST BE SUBMITTED AT LEAST 10 CALENDAR DAYS PRIOR TO THE START OF THE CLASS. NO EXCEPTIONS.
  4. By submitting the Prerequisite Verification Form, the applicant is agreeing to the following statement: “I have read the testing and equipment requirements listed on your website and I’m able to meet these requirements.”
  5. If verification documentation is approved, you will receive an email from CSUDH OSHA staff confirming the completion of your course registration (please allow 3 business days for processing).

Course Description

OSX 950 - OSHA 500 OSHA Standards for the Construction IndustryThis course is designed for individuals interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour construction safety and health Outreach Training Program. Using OSHA Construction Standards as a guide, this course places special emphasis on topics which are most hazardous.

This course allows the student to become a trainer in the OSHA Outreach Training Program, to conduct both 10- and 30-hour Construction Outreach classes. Students who wish to participate as authorized Outreach trainers must prepare a presentation on an assigned topic, and successfully pass a written exam at the end of the course.

Who Should Attend

Individuals responsible for overseeing safety on construction projects such as: hospitals, military installations, highways, federal building, cities, school districts, ports, refineries, and many other projects. Participants in this course must have basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Power Point to prepare a presentation.

  1. Describe the requirements and resources for the OSHA Outreach Training Program
  2. Utilize adult learning principles and techniques
  3. Develop appropriate multi-media materials
  4. Explain the application of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act
  5. Describe the OSHA recordkeeping requirements
  6. Describe the OSHA and ANSI guidelines for safety and health programs
  7. Explain corrective actions for common hazards related to CFR 29 1926
  8. Identify required curriculum for the Outreach Training Program

Prerequisites: (See Steps to Enroll above ▲)

  • Students must successfully complete the OSHA 510: Occupational Safety and Health Standards for Construction and have five (5) years of safety and health work experience in the construction industry. If this course was not completed at CSUDH, please submit to the  OSHA Dropbox a certificate of completion or an official transcript showing successful completion of the OSHA 510 course from their respective OSHA Training Institute Education Center. 
  • A degree in occupational safety and health, a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation may be substituted for two (2) years of work related experience. 
  • Students should obtain guidance on whether they meet this requirement from the OSHA Training Institute Education Center where they intend to receive the training.
  • Authorized OSHA Outreach Training Program trainers are required to attend OSHA 502: Update for Construction Industry Outreach Trainers at least once every four (4) years to maintain their trainer status.

Course Length: 4 days
Recommended Materials: Pen, pencil, highlighter and writing pad. It is recommended that each student have a laptop/tablet for use in preparing presentations


 

 Registration Eligibility

Students who wish to participate in OSHA–numbered courses in the online synchronous video conferencing format must have a valid physical address in OSHA's San Francisco Region (AK, AZ, CA, OR, NV, HI, ID, WA, Guam, and American Samoa), or obtain permission from their local OTIEC to attend a class outside their home region.

Other CSUDH OTIEC courses can be taken by anyone (no residency required).
