OSX 974c • Refinery Hazard Control and Safe Work Practices
Course Description
This course covers general oil refinery hazard identification, evaluation and control methods including common safe work practices.
This course offers information on oil refinery hazards and how to differentiate and assess health & safety risks, the use of permits and common safe work practices to control hazards during hot work, work at heights, confined space and other refinery situations. It also covers process safety management hazards and controls and reviews general principles of isolation and cleanup prior to mechanical work.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify general process safety hazards inherent in a chemical plant or oil refinery
- Discuss hazard and risk assessment methodologies such as risk matrices and job safety analysis, and perform basic safety risk assessments
- Compare and asses typical refinery hazards (chemical, physical, biological, radiological, etc.)
- Identify Process Safety Management (PSM) hazards control systems that should be in place in a chemical or oil refinery plant
- Identify common permitting and field verification processes used to control work hazards including permit-to-work, hot work and confined spaces
- Discuss process equipment isolation and cleanup and how lock out and tag out practices apply in complex process plants and group lockout scenarios
- Identify work-at-height hazards and controls in a refinery setting
