The U-RISE Program
Program Information
The Undergraduate Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (U-RISE) program at California State University, Dominguez Hills is funded in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The U-RISE program provides support for honors level students underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences to improve their preparation for Ph.D. programs. The training grant provides funding for the last two years of the student's undergraduate education to enable full engagement in the training experience.
Upon admission to the program, U-RISE students are integrated into active research laboratories at CSUDH, the Lundquist Institute at Harbor UCLA Medical Center, and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. Students select a research mentor who will establish a reserach project best suited to the student's level and interest. Students are expected to participate in research during the academic year, as well as, summer research programs at other universities to broaden their depth of experience. Students are also expected to attend discipline specific conferences and present their work. These experiences will enhance U-RISE students competitiveness for entrance into top-tier Ph.D. programs after they graduate from Dominguez Hills. The opportunity to participate in active research gives RISE students an edge in becoming a Ph.D. candidate and establishing themselves into successful scientific careers joining the biomedical workforce to improve the lives and health of our nation's citizens.
Student Support
Each trainee receives a monthly stipend of $1,195.00 and may earn up to $14,340.00 per year. Selected students are awarded up to $3,500.00 to participate in summer research at leading institutions nationwide. In addition, students receive financial assistance to cover tuition and fees (up to 60%) per year, a travel allowance of $1000.00 and up to $1000.00 for laboratory research supplies.
