Chelsea Asman earned her BFA in dance performance from Chapman University and is a graduate of the MFA in dance program at University of California, Irvine. Chelsea has shown work at California State University Dominguez Hills, Glendale Community College, University of California, Irvine, L.A. Dance Festival, MixMatch Dance Festival, Transient Truths, Invertigo Dance Theatre’s Not Quite Love Stories, and HHII by Nebula Dance Theatre in Santa Barbara, California. Chelsea returns annually to Nevada Joint Union High School in Grass Valley, CA to set works for their dance program, and has also choreographed children’s musicals for Leal Elementary School in Cerritos, CA and Arts Alive Summer Blast in Torrance, CA. Over the years, Chelsea has been an active member of the Los Angeles dance community. She co-produced Women Manifest Dance in 2015 in West Hollywood with Tina Banchero, a dance festival supporting the work of local, LA based female choreographers. In 2013 Chelsea co-founded CMDC, Contemporary Modern Dance Collective, a group with a mission to provide the Los Angeles dance community with consistent, affordable contemporary modern dance classes, and was the Committee Chair of the group until 2016.
She has performed with many LA based dance companies including Diavolo Dance Theatre’s education company, Invertigo Dance Theatre, Multiplex Dance, Kairos Dance Company, Jess Harper and Dancers, and Jay Bartley and Dancers. From 2006 to 2011 she was the assistant to choreographer Tiffany Billings and performed as soloist in many of her works. As a graduate student Chelsea had the privilege of working as the teaching assistant for Donald McKayle’s Etude Ensemble, as well as teaching courses in jazz, modern, and social dance. She currently teaches jazz and yoga at Glendale Community College and for both the Kinesiology Department and Dance Departments at California State University, Dominguez Hills. She is also a teaching artist for Everybody Dance LA! where she runs their Mentor Match program providing mentors for middle and high school students. Chelsea has also taught at Loyola Marymount University and Fullerton Community College. In addition to her dance training, Chelsea is a certified personal trainer, which inspired her thesis research exploring how to incorporate muscular strengthening and cardiorespiratory conditioning into a collegiate level modern dance technique class.
