This course examines the geoscience, recreational opportunities, and environmental conservation issues associated with great waterfalls around the world. It is an introduction to the hydrological science of waterfalls, and a geographical and visual orientation to some of the world’s most compelling natural features. In surveying them, we will broadly consider what makes a waterfall “great.” We will contrast historical notions of cascading streams with modern attempts to assess their value—recreational, spiritual, psychological, and environmental—versus competing utilitarian purposes.
