HUX Made Her Master’s Degree Possible

Erin Renouf Mylroie found online education the perfect solution to a problem. “It was so convenient -- I loved the program,” Erin says. “We were at a point where I wanted to further my education, but I wasn’t sure where I would be.”

After teaching Spanish to first graders at elementary school in St. George, Utah, and in Whittier, and with her master’s degree completed, she plans to teach Spanish at Dixie College in St. George.

Coming from family of 10 children, Erin always knew the importance of pursuing her education. “As a middle child, I was in an enviable position. I have always been able to learn so much from my siblings,” Erin recalls. “Everybody in my family has always been very motivated and very self-challenging.”

Erin continues to accept new challenges. After graduating from Brigham Young University in 1995, she soon married and moved to New York in 1996 with her husband who also graduated from BYU in the same class. Erin returned to California in 1997 until her husband completed his graduate work in physical therapy in 2002. Erin enrolled in the online Humanities External Degree program at CSUDH in 2001 and hasn’t looked back since.

Erin knew it would be difficult to advance her education as a new mother and admits her 3-year-old-daughter, Sailor, and 1-year-old-son, Wesley, played a major role in her decision to pursue an online degree. “I wanted to do something that would enable me to be with my little children while they slept,” she says. “When they napped I could get up early, and it would not interfere with my family responsibilities and my other responsibilities.”

Erin will have plenty of company when she attends graduation. Her sister, Heidi, who also graduated from BYU in the same class, will again join her as they both receive certificates for the master’s program together on Friday.
